Usage Advice

SETTING UP A VCR

Most video recorders have scart connections, so a scart to scart lead will do the job just fine to connect it up to a TV.  Make sure both your devices have one spare.  Also you will need an aerial connection for recording.  A connection from the output of another device or from the aerial will go into the back of the video in the antenna in point, and the output will go to your TV.  You then need to tune in the video for it to record.  This doesn't mean finding a station on your TV, putting a tape into the video and running it (though you can do this in addition to the scart lead).  This means tuning the TV stations coming in from the aerial input into the channel numbers on the video, so that when you view your vcr's channel on the TV, the channels change over.  One that's sorted you are ready to go.

PLUGGING TV AUDIO INTO A Hifi/ Home cinema amplifier

Most TV sets just have scart sockets on them,, and any audio out on TV is proportional to the volume.  On most TV sets, make sure you have a spare output scart socket, buy a scart to 4 phono lead (stereo audio), or a switched scart to 3 phono lead, and plug the audio in into a spare auxiliary input on your Hifi / Home cinema amplifier.  If you have an audio input on your home cinema system, you can do this to enhance your TV viewing.  On some sets, this has been proven not to work, because of a very low output from the TV, causing very quiet output on an amplifier.  One way to get around this is to buy a 2 phono to 2 phono lead, plug one pair into the audio output on the back of your digibox (all sky boxes that I have seen have them, no idea about freeview boxes), and plug the other into the audio input of your home cinema system / Hifi, and enjoy a higher quality sound.  If you have a pro logic television, this is probably not worth it unless you have a better home cinema system, but any nicam stereo TV owners who own Hifis or Home Cinema units in the same room will benefit from the improved audio.

PLUGGING YOUR DVD PLAYER INTO YOUR TV

This is different between different setups.  Check to see what outputs your DVD player has.  If you use a DVD/VCR combo, it will have a scart socket.  you MUST use this to get a picture from both your DVD and VCR through an AV port.  Most stand alone DVD players have scart, S video, and composite (yellow phono) output.  Check to see if you have any of these types available on your TV set.  Not only must they be part of your TV set, but they must also not be in use.  If at all possible use scart.  S Video is next preferred, then it is composite video.

Scart - To use scart sockets, you need a scart to scart lead.  Plug one into your DVD player and one into your TV set.  That is all you need to do.

S Video - To use S video, you need an S video to s video lead, plugging one end into your DVD player and one into your TV.  Then you need a 2 phono to 2 phono lead for the audio.  Plug one pair into your DVD player  and the other into either your TV or your Hifi, depending on where you want the sound to come out.

Composite - If you plan to put the audio straight into your TV, chose a 3 phono to 3 phono lead.  Put the 3 plugs at one end into your TV and the others into your DVD player, making sure the colours go to the right plug.  If you plan to have the audio running into a Hifi, then buy a single phono to single phono lead to run between the video out on your player and the video in on your TV, and have a 2 phono to 2 phono lead running between the player and the Hifi.

Plugging composite into a scart socket - If you haven't got a scart socket on your DVD player, and only scart on your TV, get a scart to 3 phono input adaptor (S03) and plug it into the back of your TV.  Then you have a composite video input, so you can follow the instructions above.

Sacrifice your video recorder - If you have no spare scart inputs, free up a scart socket by tuning your video into a TV channel, and unplugging the lead.  If you haven't got your video into a scart socket, do this with your digibox.  If this doesn't work, you will need an RF modulator (POA), though we can try to help you free up an input. (email Bill or Ian).

CONNECTING YOUR COMPUTER TO YOUR TV

You need to have a computer with a TV out card for this.  TV out cards have either S video video outputs or composite, or both.  The audio will require a 3.5mm stereo jack, plugged into the audio out (green) socket of the sound card, to 2 phono plugs (TV, Hifi etc), no matter which way it is done.  If you are using s video, use an s video to s video lead, if using composite, use a single phono to phono lead.  You can plug these inputs into a scart adapter for scart compatibility.  Remember you need a video card with TV out, and you need to turn on the TV out function on within the operating system.
